Key takeaways

  • Google announced an AI Mode update on October 15, 2026 that adds more inline links to AI Mode and AI Overviews, per the Google Keyword blog.
  • The biggest test for agents is a section at the top of some AI answers that highlights official websites, with context on why each link helps (Google, October 15, 2026).
  • In the same announcement, Google said it is testing clickable creator names on video results in AI Mode, which open a Search profile for that creator.
  • Google Search Central says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, on a page last updated December 10, 2025.
  • That same Google page lists keeping Business Profile information current as a recommended practice for AI features.

What the Google AI Mode update changed on October 15

The Google AI Mode update is about links. On October 15, 2026, Google said it is showing more inline links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, and placing them higher in answers more often.

That matters to every agent who has watched AI answers swallow clicks. A link next to the sentence it supports gets seen.

Google listed five changes in the announcement. Some are rolling out. Others are tests. Here is how they line up for a real estate business.

Why the official websites test is the one to watch

Google described a test section that highlights official sites at the top of a response. Its example was a help page, sign up page, or pricing page for a software company.

Now picture a buyer asking AI Mode about a specific agent or team by name. If Google treats your site as the official source, your link can sit above the summary. If your name, website, and profile disagree, Google has less reason to trust any single version.

Google has not said how it picks official sites. So nobody can promise placement. What you can control is consistency. That is the core of the PAWN+ identity framework, and you can see how it works on the AI search optimization page.

A 15-minute consistency check

  • Search your own name and your team name in Google. Note which site shows first.
  • Compare the business name on your website, your Google Business Profile, and your brokerage roster page.
  • Confirm your phone number matches everywhere, digit for digit.
  • Open your site’s About page. Make sure it states who you are, where you work, and how to reach you.

Video creator profiles reward real names

The second test puts clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode. Each name opens a Search profile with more context about that creator.

For agents, this is a reason to clean up the video channel. A channel called “Best Homes 4 U” tells Google very little. A channel under your real name, with your website in the profile, connects your videos to the rest of your identity.

What Google says you do not need

Google’s Search Central page on AI features is blunt. It says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations necessary. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

The same page lists practical basics. Allow crawling. Link your pages to each other. Keep important content in text. Keep your Business Profile information current. Verify your site in Search Console.

In other words, nobody can sell you a secret switch for AI Mode. The work is clear identity, helpful pages, and a well kept Google Business Profile. Search Console also reports AI feature traffic inside its normal Web performance data, so you can measure the change yourself.

How this connects to last month’s AI Overviews shift

Earlier this month we covered how AI Overviews took over most branded searches in September. You can read that breakdown in Google AI Overviews Hit Brand Searches.

Put the two stories together and the pattern is plain. More searches for your name now end in an AI answer. Google is now adding more ways for that answer to send people to the source.

What agents do this week

  1. Run the 15-minute consistency check above and fix any mismatch on the sites you control.
  2. Pick your three most asked buyer or seller questions. Give each one its own page or blog post with a direct answer up top.
  3. Rename your video channel to your real name if it is not already, and add your website link.
  4. Add a real photo as the featured image on every blog post, since related article links now show thumbnails.
  5. Open Search Console and note your current Web clicks, so you can compare in 30 days.

Results depend on your market, your consistency, and the work you put in. Google can change or end any test at any time.
