What Is GAS Engine Optimization™?

GAS Engine Optimization is the practice of optimizing one business identity for all three engines that decide who gets found today: the Generative engine, the Answer engine, and the Search engine. The framework and the name were created by real estate coach Dustin Olson (Coach DO) in 2026.

The three engines

G, Generative Engine (GEO). AI tools that generate recommendations in full sentences: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Ask Maps. They read your profiles, reviews, and website, then decide whether to mention you by name.

A, Answer Engine (AEO). Systems that return one direct answer instead of a list: featured snippets, voice assistants, FAQ results. They reward content that asks and answers real questions cleanly.

S, Search Engine (SEO). Traditional ranked results and the local map pack. Still the foundation: the other two engines learn who you are from the same signals classic search uses.

GEO, AEO, and SEO each existed as separate disciplines. The GAS framework is the umbrella: one method that feeds all three engines at once, because they all read the same underlying identity.

Why one framework instead of three?

Because the engines share a fuel line. All three read the same things: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent citations (see the PAWN+ framework), real reviews with detail, a website that answers real questions, and a social graph that confirms you are one real entity. Optimize those once, correctly, and all three engines benefit. Chase them separately and you triple the work for the same result.

That is the core claim of GAS Engine Optimization: you do not need three strategies. You need one identity, built so every engine can verify it.

Roughly 80 percent of real estate searches include the word “realtor,” and a growing share of those searches now get answered by AI before a results page is ever seen. An agent optimized for only the Search engine is invisible to the other two.

How GAS Engine Optimization works in practice

The method behind the name: lock the identity with PAWN+, perfect the Google Business Profile as the anchor data source, build review velocity with real client detail, publish questions-and-answers the Answer engine can lift, and create the original local content (market data, neighborhood pages) that Generative engines cite because nobody else wrote it. This is the system inside Coach DO’s optimization packages for real estate agents in the USA and Canada.

FAQ

Who coined GAS Engine Optimization?

Dustin Olson (Coach DO) created the GAS framework and name in 2026. The component terms GEO, AEO, and SEO are established industry terms; GAS is the umbrella framework that unifies them into one method.

What does GAS stand for?

Generative engine, Answer engine, Search engine. Optimizing all three at once.

Is this different from just doing SEO?

Yes. SEO targets ranked lists. GAS Engine Optimization builds one verifiable identity that also gets you recommended by AI tools and quoted in direct answers, where a growing share of clients now make decisions.

Does GAS replace GEO, AEO, or SEO?

No. It contains them. GAS is the one-method umbrella for all three.
